Hello, I removed my lower unit off of a 2000 175 Johnson. I was having problems with no reverse or little reverse and grinding sounds, bad. This just started recently past three trips out. Buy the end of the third it was really sounding bad with no reverse. Forward was fine. I checked oil and had very little metal shavings. Though I did notice the back part of the lower unit case does have a lot of wear and worn out like if the propellar was rubbing on the outside of the lower unit casing. I don't have the history on this unit to see if this was done prior. The shaft turns well and easy. I moved the reverse and it seems to move easy but I do hear like maybe a bearing is sounding.

How do you remove the propellar shaft to check the gears? Are they pressed in or do you turn like a screw? Help I am attempting to fix it myself.

What is the history of the engine, is it new to you?
Did it run ok with this prop in the past?
Is it possible someone installed the wrong prop that its hitting the rear housing, do you have a spare prop you can try?
have you looked up the correct prop for your engine?

I would also strongly urge you to get hold of a shop manual for that engine.
AT the least look up your engine on evinrude.com and see if theres a rear prop bushing missing.

Posting the model number is helpfull too.:)

1999 johnson 175
Model # J175VLSSS
Serial # G 04813291
Date of Manufacture 12/1999
Engine Family # YIPXM0158210

The engine came with the boat, it was used and was working well. I had the carburators cleaned. It was running great. I had a problem with the fluid hydraulic system for steering and I had it replaced with a cheaper system, plain which you have to force to steer.
Although it was always noisey when it reverse, it got worse the past 2 times I went out. It runs great in forward. I had adjusted the reverse cable system and thought I had made a difference with water hooked up and the engine on. But when I tried the third time to go out, Reverse was really sounding pretty bad, grinding and It would give me reverse but very little power like it used too. Reverse would overflow into the boat, now it only spins with little or no water overflow into the boat.

I removed the lower unit and I turn the shaft and propeller shaft forward and reverse but don't hear the loud grinding noise, just a little rumbling inside the lower unit. I think it may have been the propellar on the outside of the casing which is only on the lower right hand 1/4 of the cirlce casing. It looks like it was done on the outside more than on the inside. I need to check the propellar on the inside.

Could this be caused by a shift with a bearing out of whack?

Could this be an adjustment of the cable reverse being too much and pulling in the propellar?

When I push forward, It is hard to push handle all the way, it seems to give in and set itself, I can feel it.

When I push reverse, the handle goes all the way down and I need to really press it . It is easy thought but started to grind really bad. It seems the water action and propeller were weak.
