2000 Johnson 200 Hp Lower unit problem

I have lost forward gear in my lower unit. The engine will start but it stays engaged in reverse. I have disconected the control cable at the engine and tried to shift it manually into neutral and forward while looking at the shifting rod going to the lower unit which moves too freely, but it still stays in reverse. I know the problem is in the lower unit but where should I start? I now understand by browsing the internet this unit seems to have continous problems. Any ideas would be appreaciated.
