Gotta go by the last letter in your model number. They made mid-year changes to the motor - there is an S, C, and R series. The cooling system was completely redesigned for 2001 and the engine block was changed to 3.3 litres.

Trims, ignition parts, gearcases, motor covers, etc are interchangeable from 1993 and newer.

Re: 2000 Johnson 225 parts compatibility

Guys,

My motor is the 2000 225.

The parts motor is a 1997 200HP. I dont know the model # of the donor motor! :(

I have looked thru the parts blow up to the best of my ability and see that things like the power pack, flywheel, heads, regulator seem to be the same.

I notice the VRO is different and the carbs and crankcase parts are different.

HOW ABOUT THE LU??? I couldnt figure that one out.

The donor motor is practically a give away so I may go for it.

let me know what you think....are these motors generally built on the same platform?

I dont think the 3.3 ever came with carbs only in Ficht to my knowledge..Motor for 1993 and up will interchange as this is when they went to closed deck style block and new style crankshaft. The only difference between a 200 and 225 is the carbs as venturi's are bigger in 225 and the lower unit will fit.

Re: 2000 Johnson 225 parts compatibility

This is a hard one....there are differences that will jump up and bite you if you are hoping to get this donor motor to use for spares if something on your 2000 225 fails.
Take for instance the stator. The depending on the year, the connectors on the stator may not work on your 2000. Some stators had ring terminals, others had plug/receptacles.
Same with the regulator.
In 1996, the whole engine wiring harness changed to MWS system with Deutsch connectors.
Regarding carbs, one thing is a fact...the black plastic carb body must remain with it's correct matching throttle plate. There are matching passages in the carb body / throttle plate assy that prohibit swapping. This is particularly true when changing years. For instance, the carb for a 1994 has three fixed jets and one idle adjusting screw at the 10 o'clock position on the carb. It has 4 side screws holding the labyrinth plate on the side.
The carb for a 1996 has two fixed jets and one idle adj. screw at the 7 o'clock position. It has 5 screws holding the labyrinth plate.
The jetting is very very different...just compare on the parts site.
So, there are very obvious differences between those two years, and if you wanted to use one 1996 carb black plastic body on your 2000....I doubt it would work.
The VRO (OMS) pump should be the same all years 1994 up.
Probably many other differences, it is wise to get on the BRP site and really study the diagrams and pics.
One other thing....to make it even more complicated, OMC BRP had a habit of changing part numbers when there was really no difference in the part. Something to do with ongoing support for part numbers that were "X" years old after the bankruptcy....not sure of the details.
You are best off to look the motor over very very very carefully comparing to your 2000.

Re: 2000 Johnson 225 parts compatibility

both great replies...keep it coming.

Ideally in my search for a donor I just want a good parts motor. BUT I am intrested in prepping the donor powerhead (rebuild) for the boat in the long term.

OK I passed on the 200 and am looking at 225's again. Thanks for the tip on the electrical. So far:

LU
Covers
some electrical
flywheel
heads
some fuel

seem to be universal thru many years while other stuff is more picky.
