Please bear with me. I bought my first boat 2 months agao. It's a 2000 Bennington 22' pontoon with a 2000 Johnson 50hp outbard. I really know nothing about boat motors but have worked on cars and motorcycles for a long time. I want to try to be able to do some routine maintenance on the boat myself. Tune ups, etc. I will be ordering a manual soon, but was just sitting here thinking about things.

Do boats have air filters that need changed? Does this particular motor have points like the older cars do? I really have no clue. Haven't had the top of the motor off yet to even look. I did have some idling problems and those fuinally went away with some new gas. I guess the gas that was in it had been there awhile.

Anyway, don't yell at me for asking dumb questions. I'm just trying to educate myself on boat ownership and you all appear to be the knowledge base.

Thanks a bunch and have fun on the water.

I am very sure you will get detailed answers coming soon, but no dust in the lake, so no air filters required. Outboards stopped using points awhile ago in favor of electronic ignition systems, so you don't have, or need either. Cheers.

Do you have an owner's manual? It will point you to basic maintenance requirements. You can download one free from BRP's website.
