Think i would notice any differance in power if i put a new set of Boyesen Reeds in my motor? My motor runs fine now but I know that on my dirt bikes they make a HUGE differance. Also how come they recomend on dirt bikes replacing your reeds every 10 to 15 hours to keep your performance at peak level but on outboards no one ever mentions replacing until they are completly shot?

The outboard reeds(fiberglass/carbon) are thicker(.020-.025) than the offroad series thus last longer(3-5yrs). The 2 stage reeds help low end and you might gain 5hp overall which will add about 1 mph to top end. You will need to adjust low end jetting as if motor leans spits it will split or burn upper reed as its thinner. I myself do not use a 2 stage reed but a solid one.

What would be a good set then? Not lookin for any major HP gains just a little better performance .If that possible out of a 50 horse.LOL!!

If it was my mtr and running fine I'd just leave it that way and not mess with it. You may not see any gain in speed by messing with the reeds.

You will probably notice a smoother acceleration - maybe a bit faster acceleraation, maybe. You will notice a speed gain if you are at a high enough top rpm that the stock steel reeds are starting to flutter and are what's limiting the motor from higher rpms. It's rather doubtful that you are at that point but possible. If your top rpmnow is like 5000 they won't magically take you to 6000 with the same set up.

Trying to get better performance may be as simple as having the right prop. A 50 HP JohnnyRude typically runs a 12-1/4 x 15P prop and on a 15 - 16 foot aluminum boat should put rpm 5500 RPM. How do I know that? I had one and experimented extensively with props (stainless, aluminum, cupped and uncupped). That motor likes to run at 5800 so prop it right, ensure the engine height is proper (av plate flush or an inch or so above the keel) and that the engine is properly tuned. Screwing with reeds will not make a hot rod out of the engine.

Yeah i know its not a hot rod motor.LOL!! I'm running a 17 pitch prop and with the boat loaded its still turning 5700 to 5800 RPMs but i think a 19 will be too much.It will run right at 35mph all day long which isn't bad for that motor i guess. Its on a 1652 lowe.
