I have a Johnson 50hp outboard engine that is working off and on for the last 2 years. It worked very well a week ago, and this last weekend it was running fine, until we stopped to fish and it had a hard time starting. Then it finially started and was working. Then it started to cut in and out, like a plug was fouling out. Checked plugs and changed gas tanks. Still did the same thing. If you pumped the primer bulb, it would run fine. It has had the carbs cleaned recently, new diaphram in fuel pump, tried all new hoses, tried a new fuel pump, I am out of ideas. This boat has had the oil injection system disconnected. We tooking it in and they said that its not getting fuel to the fuel pump and they replaced all of the hoses. Still doesn't work. Any help or suggestions would be great. We were suggested an electronic pump, to eliminate everything. Thanks, Josh

Having to pump the primer bulb to get engine to continue to run is indicative of a failing fuel pump.Check to insure the fuel pump pulse hose is connected securely between the crankcase and the pump. Also any air leaks on the suction side of the fuel pump could be culprit. Are you using the VRO pump as a conventional 50:1 pumper or have you changed to a conventional fuel pump?

Have you tried disconnecting the fuel pump discharge hose and routing it into a container and testing its output at cranking speed? Are you sure the fuel tank is venting properly?

Check the pulse hose and nipple in crankcase. The starter rubs a hole in the pulse hose close to the crankcase nipple. You have to grind a notch in the starter end cap to clear the hose and nipple. The passage in nipple and block should be checked. If dealer ask them to check for service bulletin about spring in pulse hose.
