Just purchased this engine and previous owner said he knows the lower unit was changed out. From the research I've done 2000 lower units have external Water Screens. I'm trying to identify the lower unit which which has internal Water Screens. Before I pull the lower unit off in the spring I want to get a jump start on parts. I've attached some pictures of the lower unit Plus a number engraved next to the trim tab which reads
20 EV
185930
Any help would be appreciated thank you in advance

My '98 Johnny has the plastic water grates that are removed with 2 screws.

You might look for a part number, and see if it is a OMC brand and try to match it up.

SEI likely makes new gearcases for your motor, and their prices are reasonable, so you might see if it is one of those. I think the 90HP motor could have either the V4 or V6 gearcases installed.

That is an older v-4 crossflow gearcase.-----And in my opinion it is a more durable gearcase than those installed on the 60 degree loopers.---.----Remove the prop.----Look inside and see if there are 4 screws holding the propshaft bearing housing in place.

Yes I've actually been in contact with them and they couldn't tell me if it was theirs unless I checked the serial number on the inside of the lower unit. After more research I'm thinking more and more it is an aftermarket SE 304. I'm just a little confused because their website states "
SE304 Gear Case replaces most early style Johnson/Evinrude V-4 Lower Units
from 1978-1998 with a 4-1/8 bullet diameter. The case has internal Water Screens"

zooming in on the attached pics it looks like an exact match.

Ty for your response.
I will remove the prop tomorrow and post back with my findings.

I would rather have say a 1992 V-4 crossflow ( also an exact match ) unit in good condition.-----Than a new aftermarket one !!

Many years of crossflow V-4 have that gear case!!----And gearcases from say a 1980 model V-4 would also fit.----So easy in my opinion.

Just an update I'm still waiting for an inch and a quarter socket to remove the prop nut.

My 1 1/16th didnt fit. I took a tape measurement and it was actually an inch and a quarter. I found that very strange. Possibly could be off a millimeter or two

Finally got a crescent wrench big enough to get the nut off unfortunately I can't see the gear case. Going to have to get a spotlight or something. I will keep this updated thanks for all the help guys

?----sure it is 1-1/4" ?
Prop off unfortunately even with light I cannot see inside but there looks like there are two bolts visible on the top and then I guess the anode on the bottom of the bearing carrier is in the way and all greased up

I'm thinking this is an original gear case. UP is stamped on top. (Just like this OEM) attahed pic.... Obviously all this will be confirmed once I pull the lower unit. I'm just waiting for my son to visit so we can get it off.
