2000 Merc 200hp gear grinding

This is a new motor to me - it seems to grind a little going into either forward or reverse - I don't think this is normal - what might cause this? Is it something someone with slightly above average mechanical ability can fix? Any special tools needed? Can anyone give step by step instructions? This is a 200 CXL SW Counter Rotation year 2000

Brian<br />From what I've experienced, the Mercs do tend to grind a bit when put into gear. Make sure your idle settings are correct(Not to high) and shift with authority into gear. Don't slam it into gear, but firmly shift. A slow shift wears gears and will cause what you are experiencing.
