Hi all,

I have a 2000 Merc 5.0L with a 2 BBL setup. I need a new carb, so I figured this would be the opportune time to swap to a 4 BBL carb & 4 bbl intake to pick up ~30-40hp. Has anyone done this before, and if so whats required / needed? Not finding a lot searching the forums and facebook groups.

Ayuh,..... The easiest swap is to bolt on a marine rated 4bbl. intake, an edlebrock 1409 carb, which is the same carb Merc uses, 'n a late model Merc throttle cable bracket,.....

Hate to burst your bubble but you're not gaining 30-40 hp with just a carb swap on an otherwise stock motor. The 2bbl mercarb is reliable and effective and the swap wouldn't be worth the effort IMHO.

Would agree that more likely you will get 20-25 hp vs 40 hp increase.

What you will definitely get is much better throttle response. i did this upgrade when repowering from a 4.3 to 5.0, so I never ran the 2 bbl on the 5.0, but several of my friends have 2 bbl 5.0s in similar boats to mine, and the response to throttle increases is pretty different.

You will need the aforementioned edlebrock 1409, 4 bbl intake (there are cast iron and aluminum options), merc part 805359T throttle bracket will allow you to cleanly attach the throttle and slave solenoid/breaker, merc part 24-32817 throttle return spring will complete it. you will also have to modify or replace the fuel line. The merc wiring for the choke will work with the edlebrock.

worth it that's up to you, I needed a new carb and intake when I repowered. if you like tinkering and money isn't too tight....
