2000 mercrusier 3.0l stumbles bad at cold start

my Mercrusier 3.0l seems to stumble and fall flat on its face when its cold and I try to give it some throttle. it has a new fuel/water separator filter. It starts fine doesn't want to advance when cold. The local boat Mechanic said its likely float elevation issues. Any idea on what to check or adjust? this is my first I/O. Thanks for any help

Ayuh,.... It's got an auto-choke, do ya advance the throttle to Wot to set the choke, before hittin' the key,....??

Sounds like it's lean when cold, so the function of the Choke is the 1st thing that comes to mind,.....

Bad float adjustment oughta make it run funny/ bad, all through the rpm band at all temps,.....

I have not had a chance to run it WOT, just running it in the yard. This is the symptoms the mechanic mentioned to me after he called and said that he finished the Bellows for me.

When I started it up for the first time a couple weeks ago it seemed fine. I pumped the throttle 7 times and left it in the forward position and it fired up instantly

Ayuh,.... Ya gotta advance the throttle to Wot, before ya turn the key, to set the choke,....
Atleast once,.... pumpin' is fine if it needs it, but ya gotta go Wot atleast once,....

To Check the choke,....
Go out, advance the throttle to Wot, 'n pull back to say, 1/2, 1/3 throttle,...
Then go back, 'n pull the flame arrester off the carb, 'n Look,...
The choke oughta be closed,....

When you mentioned go out, and"""""" - Do you mean take the boat out on the lake and go WOT, or do it with out the boat running in the yard?
