I have a really nice and very clean 00' Merc 40hp 4-Stroke (pull start / Carbed) motor that I rebuilt a few years ago and use it primarily on my duck boat during the winter months. I had noticed that it was becoming hard to start this past year, but thought it was dirty carbs.
Being 'fairly' knowledgable of the motor I Ohms checked the pulser coil and the spec is 300-350, I got around 371. The stator (852387T7) has 4 wires coming out of it (Green w/ white stripe, White w/green stripe, 2 yellow w/ black stripe wires). I checked the Gr to Gr/wht was 712 and the two yellow to yellow wires were 7 ohms. Q- Are these yellow wires coming off the stator the low speed or ignition coils? I didn't see in the manual those color wires nor did I try a peak voltage test. Also, on this motor there is only a pulser coil and no trigger under the flywheel. My guess is the stator seeing that the yellow wires gave me such a low reading but not completely sure due to the mis-match color wires from the manual. It's an expensive part that I don't want to guess on..
