yes this is a 2000 md. johnson with probably less than 50 hrs. on the motor was riding down the lake and motor siezed up and would not even try to start for about 3 hrs. finaly did try but as soon as it would try to start would die. had someone at local dealer tell me sounds like piston damage, and could cost around 3500 to 5000 dollars to fix can someone please give some advise as to how to go about this, and any way to possibly get some help from johnson on this since the motor is nearly new. thanks wayne

Hi Wayne
Really sorry to hear that about your motor. Hopefully you are on very good terms with your dealer. The first thing I would do is take it in and have the dealer tear it down to determine the exact cause of the failure. That will be very important in determining if a claim is possible(Big question out of Warranty) and for preventing it from happening again after rebuild. Once it is determined why it happened, you can proceed from there. This all may be difficult due to the year of the engine being close to the Bombardier?? takeover around that time. I believe it is going to be tough, if not impossible, to get it done under warranty, but who knows? Maybe some others who are more familiar with the Warranty aspects can help further. Good Luck,

Wayne,

I hate to tell you this but you're in a bit of a pickle here.

As you may know, OMC (John/Rude) went bankrupt in '01'. Bombardier bought the John/Rude names, but that's it. They didn't buy any of the liabilities (warranties).

You can appeal to Bombardier, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The best way to appeal, in my opinion, is through a dealer you trust.

Wayne

Sounds like it may have overheated, causing the motor to seize up. Did you get any warning horns? VRO working good? Obviously it's turning over now, as you checked the compression. Try shooting a little oil in the low cylinder and check compression again. Also, try hooking up a portable tank with a 25:1 mix and see if it runs. If so, be sure to make sure the water pump is putting out and then check compression again. You can get a comp. gauge at any auto parts store.

Wayne,

Have you checked the gear lube?? Low hours and compression sounds fair. You said this motor locked up. If you stuck a piston the compression would be off a lot more. I suspect seized upper driveshaft bearing.
