Re: 2000 Model Penta 3.0 Engine
Ayuh,... He's sellin' a Rebuildable Core long block, not a running motor...
That's worth a Hundred, maybe 2 in My world...
Yup!
As for the guy not repairing the engine and dropping in a new engine, some people are like that. They would rather spend $2000-3000 and know it's good opposed to fixing the problem for $500-1000. They look at repairing an engine as a band-aid fix and would rather spend the extra couple thousand for piece of mind. I know a lot of people like that and they look at me strange when I repair my vehicles/boat. "Why are you working on
that when you could just go buy a new one." Well, cause I don't have an extra $25K burning a hole in my pocket...
Would I spend $450 on this being a cheap fix, probably not.
Before buying I would slap a starter on it and run a compression test, drain oil after compression test and look for metal and water in oil. Visually inspect the engine for oil leaks, freeze cracks. I'd probably pull the head too since
the seller said it most likely needs a head gasket and the head has to come off anyway. Inspect head gasket, head, cylinder walls, pistons, valves. Wave $400 at the seller and say if everything checks out and it's
only a head gasket then we have a deal. Warped head -$150, f'ed up cylinder(s) -300, cracked block or water in oil -450 ($50 for you to haul it off

). If they won't allow you to verify the condition of the engine it's just a rebuildable core, offer them $100 and roll the dice.
(oh yeah, if you do pull the head, put it back on and reinstall the push rods before leaving, you don't want the lifters rolling around in the engine and getting mixed up)
