Don't know about the price but the 3.8 is an old OMC/Volvo engine. As a non-expert I would say the issue you may have is finding parts

from the research i've done... that motor was only produced in the 80's... would it be possible to have a 2000 3.8?

Volvo Penta has a smaller percentage of the North American market - I read somewhere about 10%, but the company is big in Europe. Becuase it has a smaller percentage, there are fewer dealers, but I understood that parts are still available. The company is a going concern.

Well good news. The owner has confirmed the boat has a volvo 4.3 and not the 3.8.

We are negotiating now but i believe i am going to get it this afternoon.
