2000 Sea Ray 5.0 Mercruiser, noise in rear

Hello, I have a 2000 Sea Ray with 5.0 mercruiser, which is new to me. I have a noise similar to a scratchy alarm that comes on with the key. It is momentary with the key on, and comes from the very rear of engine. It stays on now with engine running, and I can NOT find where it is coming from. I can't imagine what alarm is in rear of engine. At first I thought it was a dry bearing making noise, but it does not follow engine rpm. Anybody have any ideas? thanks

What drive do you have? I would take the drive off, hook water to the engine, start it and see if I still have the noise. You would then know if it was an engine problem or not.
