my 250 saltwater series will not pump oil to engine tank automatically. I have checked the following

1) pump works in remote tank, as I can use emergency switch.
2) oil float for engine oil tank is working with the ohm meter.

I am unable to check the tilt sender because I am not sure how to. any advice with this would be appriciated.

I believe that you can't check the cdi so I will not even try.

any other advice given would be appricated and if all else fails I guess I will take it into the mechanic.

Thanks

Two most common causes are a problem with the sensor in the engine mounted tank or a wiring problem. There have been some extensive posts on this. Use the search to find them. It takes no real special tools to trouble shoot, mostly time.

on that motor the engine must be running for automatic transfer to occur.
on the enigine oil tank sensor the black wire is ground for all 3 circuits.
the blue/ red to ground will set the audible alarm and send the ECU into RPM reduction. with the engine running unplug the engine oil tank sender. jump the engine side of the connector blue/green to ground and the pump should turn on,take the blue/white to ground and the pump will turn off. also double check the black wire has a good path to ground, a poor ground on this wire will preclude oil and alarm functions.
a quick test is to insure the remote tank is at least half full, with the key on engine off remove the engine oil tank water drain and drain the engine tank until the alarm sounds.
the transfer pump should trigger when the alarm sounds and oil will transfer for 180 seconds. if after 180 seconds the oil tank is not refilled look for obstructions such as a clogged remote oil tank filter or pinched line. this is a self filling feature found on the 3.1 and all 2.6L motors since 95.
the 95 and up V6 motors, best I remember, dont use the trim sender to control oil transfer. there is a bit of contraversy over excatly which signal the ECU uses to detect engine run though.
basically if the ECU ``sees`` the remote tank level is ok via the remote oil tank switch and a green lamp on the tach but the engine tank switch says the engine tank level is low the ECU defaults.
this would be an abnormal condition.
so you will get 3 bars and 180 seconds of oil transfer.
if the remote tank switch is bad or you have lost the ground path for the remote oil level switc then no automatic transfer will occur and the yellow lamp on the tach will light.
green means the system is ok,yellow means the remote is low and red means the engine oil level is low.

Ray, Commander and Rodbolt,

Print out robbolts post read it several times while near the rig and test as he says and you will locate the problem. Best of luck.
rodbolt, I belive they have put the mercury switch back in the computor like they used on the early model motors in the seperate oil contoller. Lot simpler than using a trim switch that might not be working to trigger off of.
