Without knowing the exact model of the motor it is hard to say exactly but I suspect that the motor has an automatic fuel enrichment device known as Primestart.

On a 17 year old motor I suspect that the carburetor, and the Primestart passageways are in need of a thorough cleaning.

If it does not have a choke then it will have a prime start enrichment system on it.
need to make sure that is working properly , it is set properly, and you are following the starting procedure in owners manual

Time to clean the fuel system.
I would get a factory service manual, to walk you through it,it's on you tube

You and Youtube! Do you have a link to the video?

Sam - Do you have an owner's manual? Starting is covered in the manual. Yamaha has them for less than 20 bucks if you need one, assuming you have a short shaft. - https://www.yamahapubs.com/results.p...25MSHY&lang=en

Or you can search Youtube forever as some of us like to suggest.
