my buddy has a 2001 150 h.p. merc that just started having a problem with starting. he said that it just keeps spinning over then the battery starts going dead so he charged battery and tried it again and it started right up. the next day he was going to go fishing and he went out and started the boat to warm it up then when he got to the boat ramp it would not start again and drained his battery down. not sure if it is flooding or a elec. problem. it the 150 that is carb. not fuel injection. any help will greatly be appreciated
Joshua

Greetings!
Does your buddy say whether he checked the choke? A loose connection either at the ignition switch or somewhere along the wiring for the choke could cause same to respond now and then. When no fuel is sprayed--which you should hear it if it is choking properly, especially if you've squeezed the in-line primer bulb till hard--you can swing that motor for a long time without getting a response.

Hoping it's as simple as that!
Gil

How long has he had this boat?

Are you sure he is following proper starting procedure>

Pump bulb untill hard! You cant over do this!

Lift throtle partway up!

hold key in while cranking, (choke) untill engine fires, release choke!

If engine tries to die, push choke in again until it runs!

Push throtle down!

LubeDude

I have a 2002 150HP Merc and I agree with Lube Dude except for the choke directions. I believe if you turn the key to the on position and hold it in for 7-10 seconds, then turn the key to start while still holding it in, the engine should start without any problem. ;)

I dont do that on mine, (Hold it in for 7-10 seconds) and it starts fine right off! Whats the idea behind that?

Lube Dude,
I was wrong on the 7-10 second thing. I just started my motor in the yard yesterday, for the first time since around Thanksgiving. Looked through the owners manual for info on something else, and found that Merc says to turn the the key and hold in for 6 seconds - that activates the choke before you actually try to start the engine. ;)

The reason for holding the key in is because there is no choke. It is a primer system that injects fuel into the intake manifold.
