I am making this inquiry for a friend of mine. He is having trouble getting his 2001 150hp to shift into gear. It appears that there is not too much trouble getting it into forward, but some issues with getting it out of forward and back to neutrel. Can not get it into reverse at all.(Remote will not go towards revrese at all) My advise to him was to disconnect the trottle and shift cables at the motor, and check to see if the remote would shift freely towards reverse,(trying to isolate the issue, cable, remote, motor shift linkage problem). Once cables are disconnected shift it by hand to check for issue. The model number is J150VXSIF, 2001, 150hp. It is very diffrent set up from my Mercury 200. Dose anyone know of anything off the top of there head that may cause an issue like this? Is my advise to him in his trouble shooting this proplem correct? Eliminate the cables first, then look at linkage/mechanical components? Thank you for any assistance.

Re: 2001 150 Johnson shift problems

i had a similar issue with my 2000 evinrude 150.

disconnect the shift cable from the rod lever (you have to remove midsection cover) and look if you can shift by hand easily. when you need force to move the shift mechanism disconnect all linkages to the main shift lever going down to the engine , remove the plastic bearings, grease it and make sure all moves free and easy. that was my issue -the shift mechanism must move with only little force when shifting by hand.

the other sossibility is you have a problem with the cable adjustment or a bad shift cable.

You're on the right track, PB. It is more likely a shot throttle cable that won't allow the gimbal to pass thru the neutral gate.

I had the same symptom with the same motor. New cables fixed it.

Re: 2001 150 Johnson shift problems

Well fella's, it appears my friend had his own version of what to check. He started at the remote, and said he found something in there that was bent, so he went to a local supply house that sells new and used parts and got another remote box (used). They did not have a remote like his, but they GAVE him this other remote. So from what I gather he was going to get the part that he needs for the original remote out of the used one, PART WAS NOT IN IT!Now he has placed an order for a new part. URRGGGG. Well, I have not seen this bent part, but still question if that is his true problem. I have a feeling that what ever was bent got that way from him trying to force the remote. I told him to remove cables from engine since they are already off the remote and go ahead and check the cables, we will see. So now we still dont know what the issue is. No fishing this weekend. I think if he would have followed the advice given then all three things could have been checked. Cables, Remote, Shift linkage. I will post back with results when ever it happens.

yeah, when the shift linkage at the motor is stuck he will have problems and forcing it may as a consequence damage the cables and the remote. like said- verify the shift mechanism can be moved easily by hand to exclude this or to know what the issue is.

And don't try to shift the thing unless the motor is running, or someone is turning the propeller. You'll damage the shift cable.

Just a follow up as to what was replaced. He replaced the entire remote and new cables. Said it shifts fine now into forward and back to N and then Reverse.
