I have a 2001 15hp 2stroke merc and i'm having a minor problem and i hope i can get some help.Ok i will do the best i can to describe what is happening.

The way the tilt is designed is i think the same as the newer ones of today a ratcheting design. The tilt works great but my question is how does the motor lock itself into place when you are in the water and you put it in foward? When out of the water whether i put it into f or n it still lets the tilt up and down is this normal?I know on the new 4stroke tiller handle motors you have to put it in f to be able to tilt the motor.Does it just lock somehow without you seeing it or maybe there has to be pressure on the motor for it to lock?

There is no lock button to lock the motor in place either.I hope someone can help me on this one.

My 25 hp works the same way. When in forward the motor isn't locked so it can bounce over a sand bar, tree limb or what ever you may hit and protect the prop and lower unit.

Thanks for the reply windy.

What about in neutral isn't it suppose to lock?Or does it do the same thing as foward? My motor does it either way out of the water.I just talked to a merc rep and he said it should do it either way so im guessing yours does it the same way.He said it should only lock in reverse.

Not mine.I asked the rep at merc that and he looked it up on the computer in a manual and said it is suppose to be unlocked in foward and neutral and only locked in reverse as it is locked by force of the water and can't come up at all unless it hits a rock or some object. Now it has to lock in reverse or it will pop up.I also called a few merc dealers around here and they said that is the way the motor is designed so it is all good.

My 1983 25 hp and 1983 9.9 hp. locked in reverse and neutral. But when i changed the impellers. I added stainless washers to the shift shaft so it will only lock in reverse. CAUSE when I am comming to shore and throw into nuetral to beach I needed the motor to be unlocked

Do you think it's possible that they changed it down the road because my motor is 15yrs newer.I can't see it being broken. The motor has less then an hour on it.The motor is brand new and has never been in water so i hope that is the design.I guess either way in foward or neutral it should be ok as long as it locks in reverse i would assume.
