I recently finished a rebuild of my 78 Hydra Sport center console and installed a "new to me" 2001 200 xl. It is the carb version with oil injection still in tact. It currently has a 4 blade 19 pitch Turning Point Hustler prop on it. I had the boat out last weekend and it certainly performed better than with the old Blackmax 200. That said, somewhere around 2500 rpms it develops what I can only describe as a "growl". I am not sure if it is actually a sound or some sort of cavitation. At 3000 it smooths out nicely and revs up to about 4800 which is about 800 rpms short of listed WOT (5600). I was hovering around 40 mph at 4800 which seemed a little slow but I'm not complaining. Any thoughts?
I also noticed that while running around 3000-3500 it would intermittently slow down as if I had backed off the throttle. I had my hand behind the throttle and did not feel it move, so not sure what that was about. If I nudged it forward it would accelerate with no issue.
New tank, new fuel lines, new fuel water separator, new fuel. Running Startron addative. We did have an issue when the motor was first installed where it did not want to start. The mechanic thought the floats were stuck. Is it possible I just need to either run some quick clean through it or do you think I need to rebuild the carbs?
