Ok, I give up. 200 carb’d 2 stroke.

I replaced the stator a couple weeks ago because I noticed arcing coming from under the flywheel. It was hard to start and would stumble around 3,000 rpms.

I fought my way through the link and sync and finally got that straight...or so I thought. Starts much easier and isles as it should. Right about 650 in gear.

So now it will still not run at higher rpms. It climbs smoothly then stumbles and dies but restarts after pumping the bulb. Fuel restriction I assumed. I changed the inline filter, the fuel/water separator, fuel line from separator to engine, and fuel bulb. I also changed the check valve at the pickup. I inspected the pickup and it looks fine. Screen is clean and no visible cracks. Vent appears open as well.

Last night we added a new twist. I’d been sitting at idle out of gear for a few minutes waiting to raft up. Bumped it in and out of gear to maneuver. All of a sudden rpms start climbing in neutral to around 3000. Shut down and water fireworks. Trying to dock it did the same thing. Any time I shifted from forward or reverse back to neutral it would rev for 10 seconds or so before calming down.

I’m about to unbolt the @&$#ing thing and kick it overboard. Any ideas?

After link and synch, you are to set the throttle cable to push the throttle closed with some extra preload. That could help the RPM change when shifting.

You might double check your idle pickup timing (s/b 0-8* ATDC) and max spark advance (s/b 21* BTDC).

I can double check, but idle was set at about 5* ATDC and max I believe was set at 20.

I know I’m having a fuel supply issue. It’s sucking air from somewhere but I cannot find it.

Back at it again. I confirmed the pickup tube was spinning in the metal fitting so I replaced it. Used Teflon paste at threaded fittings. Cleaned the mating surface at the fuel filter and reinstalled. Checked and tightened hose clamps.

I’m still getting air in the system. I can see it at the inline filter after the fuel pump.

Is teflon paste soluble in gasoline? If so, you can have additional issues.

There is some gasket dressing gel that is gasoline resistant. The name escapes me at this time, but you can look it up. It is made by one of the major manufacturers like Permetex.

Teflon tape can work, if you are careful not to use any that could break off into the fuel line.

No idea. The mechanic suggested I use it or tape but also pointed out tape required extra care.

Turned out to be two issues. The pump needed to be rebuilt and was leaking between the pump and block. Then this morning I found a broken ground leading the the coil on #3. She’s much better now.
