2001 200xl carb. Hard shift.

New to me 2001 200 xl. New cables, shifter is in good condition. I’ve put 3-4 hours on since the install, so I’m still working out the bugs. Tonight it was really hard to get out of gear. Have not had this issue previously. Thoughts? Having steering issues (posted elsewhere) so docking was interesting tonight.

Hard to get into neutral can be that the motor is running too fast at idle. See if you can lower the idle speed.

There is also a small switch that is activated when your shifting from gear into neutral. this switch is on the back side of the bracket you installed the shift cable onto. It allows the engine to momentarily loose spark to 3 cylinders and thus helps the shift process to occur. This switch is only activated when in gear going to neutral and in the water. Wont activate without a load on the prop.
