Hey guys, those who have been following along have probably seen a number of my posts regarding what seems to be a fuel supply issue. To date, I have tried running off of a remote tank, replacing the pickup tube, replaced fuel water separator and inline fuel filter, checking and/or replacing all hose clamps and a bunch of fuel line, and replacing the primer bulb. It still is not running right and will run itself out of fuel after I try to advance past idle. I have installed a glass inline filter between the fuel pump and carbs, so now I have a better view of what is happening.
After priming and starting, I can watch fuel surge into the filter. It is usually accompanied by air. My guess all along has been that I am sucking air someplace but I have not been able to locate a leak. Sometimes the glass filter will be nearly full and then suddenly empty. Sometimes it will fill back up and sometimes it will not.
Last night I pulled the fuel pump and found a damaged gasket. I am guessing this is not helping, but I am not sure it is the only issue - see pic.
If the pump was not working well, is it possible that a sticking float or floats could be contributing to my issue? In other words, if they were not allowing fuel in the glass filter would fill up, then when they open to fill the bowl the pump could not keep up. If they were intermittently sticking closed it would appear as though there was plenty of fuel but in reality the pump could not keep up?
The motor was installed two seasons ago. We could not get it to start. Finally the mechanic smacked the side of the carbs with a screwdriver handle and she fired right up. After that I rebuilt the carbs and fuel pump and ran the rest of the season. I always run Startron, but the motor did sit all of last season. I would not think there were issues occurring that quickly. I also find it odd that all three carbs would be stuck.
Any thoughts?
