2001 225 lower unit swap w/ 88 200 unit?

What do the experts think about the liklihood of a straight swap of the 2 lower units.

Today I was running at about 4200 RPM and it was like it just jumped out of gear no forward or reverse and it is free no feel at all.

I have a 88 200 that is the same shaft lenght.

Didn't see the post earlier or I would have mentioned it'll work fine. You won't even need the O ring on the driveshaft.
