Anyone ever changed an impeller on a 2001 Johnson outboard?? Any tips would be apprecieated... Sounds like I just drop the lower unit and replace the impeller. I ordered the rebuild kit, was that necessary? Or is the just replacing the impeller enough? Any other parts need to be disconnected as I drop the lower unit? Thanks for you help!!!

Follow the instructions in your manual and youll be fine. It will tell you how to disconnect the shift. Getting the complete kit is key to doing a complete job. And doing it only once.

Good luck and have fun!

Doing it only once??? We use it in salt water and are going with changing it every other season. How often should we be changing it? Is it OK to more than two seasons??? The boat is used June through September, then it's winterized with and stored inside.

Dhadley meant once as in have to go right back bc something other than just an impeller was needed. Changing every two years is OK if you run in clean water (i.e. w/o silt ... offshore or clean lake).

For the price of an impellar or kit, it's cheap insurance to change it every year.

Even if you don't put many hours on it remember the ears are rubber and bent over in the housing.

Ounce of pervention is worth a :)
