2001 25hp johnson J25VL3SIE not priming with key switch.

Motor won't start with my normal pushing in key while starting. I have to turn the red lever in down position then pump ball to send gas to carbs, then try again then it will start up. Turn red lever back closed again. Is it the push in part of key switch that's bad?

You ALWAYS have to squeeze the primer bulb. If you have to turn the red lever on the cold start solenoid then you need to troubleshoot the wiring. See if you are getting voltage to the solenoid when the key is pushed in while cranking. If you are getting voltage then the solenoid is bad. If you do not get voltage then you probably have a bad connection from the key switch.

Put meter on while pushing in and starting, at first got no volts, then while pushing in really hard 12 volts showed up but going in and out. While cranking and holding key in hard it dropped to 9. I had to hold it in really hard to get volts, I did this because volts were in and out. It I just tried normal pressure had no volts. Somethings acting up with switch I'm thinking

Also when I turn red lever in down position, a little fuel leaks.

That is not a choke but an enrichment solenoid. It pumps extra fuel into the motor when the key is pushed in and turned and helps with the cold start. Since you are getting voltage variences.... that indicates to me that the switch is working and the solinoid is just not working right.

When the red lever is turned on the solenoid you pump it similar to a spray bottle pump to get extra fuel into the manifold. So with the lever in the non pump position for use by the motor it is not working ........... might be time for a new one. The part # 5032187 SOLENOID which should be about $75-$95 so if you can live w/o the luxury for now you might want to put it off.

My point is ......if it works on manual and you want to save the bucks .....you are okay.

With the red lever on for manual pump, I pumped the valve, it sent gas to carb as you descibed, less than 10 seconds later a hear a click sound, I start motor, it started. I have new switch, put it on, ckeck voltage ,like you said, volts are at 0.00 no variances. I try to start with switch, push in hold in , try to start, it started, I think it started because I just few minutes earlier, turned red valve and enriched with gas. I did not hear a clicking sound when I started in the non pump for use by motor. I have to go to work 2nd shift, so i'll it in the non pump position first. By the way what is that clicking sound on manual pump?

I looked for part and it says its unavailable, called dealer/shops can't get anywhere. Marineengines.com shows unavailable as well. There part # is: 0437236. Can you get part? I'll try looking for the part # you posted.

Put on new switch, pushed in key while cranking, engine started after few try's. Did again and checked voltage, was 0.00V, reckon problem fixed. I did check the ohms on selonoid they were 4.20. I also found 2 new solenoids in Florida for $80. They have 5 warehouses and have only 2 left. Might get a spare, but like you said they RARELY GO BAD. So who knows ? Are you supposed to get any volts to primer solenoid while pushing in key start and cranking the same time?
