2001 50 hp mercury, remove lower unit?

I need ot remove my lower unit to replace the water pump impeller, i was told just remove the 6 main screws and the lower unit should come apart with a little force. When i remove the screws it gives me a gap but will not come apart fully, it is connected by a shaft. Don't know what shaft its the one closiest to my hull. it seems like its made of all thread. How do i remove my lower unit?

Did you put your gear in forward?
