My mercury is stalling out, i checked the carbs they are getting fuel and are full.. checked each cylinder for spark they are all getting spark. what happens is i will choke start it it will turn over with no problem, then i will start it with no choke and it will start but then in a matter of 20 to 30 seconds it will just idle off.. it will stay running if i give it gas, but it spits smoke out.. any suggestions?

I would recommend taking the carbs off and doing a thorough cleaning(soaking) in an organic solvent for a day. Buy a carb kit(replace parts that are recommended for replacement. i.e filter) and re-install.

Re: 2001 50hp mercury is stalling out

just cleaned carbs again, did not leave them soaking for a day because they were just cleaned and soaked about a month ago. first time i removed carbs i cut the zip ties on all the fuel hoses connecting to the carbs and didnt replace them so i noticed fuel spitting out yesterday when the motor would stall so i figured it was the problem, put clamps on all the hoses and problem still occuring. someone suggested slow idle jet being clogged? where on the carb is it located? and should i clean the fuel pump? does it have a fuel pump?

If you soaked all the parts and the carburator then the idle jet screw should be OK
