We have a 2001 8hp johnny on offer for really good price, considering upgrading from the old 73 6hp seahorse.

Anything to look out for and are they generally considered good engines?

The johnny for that year was still a two stroke so it should be a pretty good motor.

too good to miss out on. whats the fins name that sits above the cavitation plate? it has a slight chip off it but nothing major.

we now have a fast growing johnny household :)

havnt had it out yet but picked it up yesterday. turned over first pop from cold (unlike my old seahorse). bit smokie at start up, but so is the older 6hp. revs good, idles good, pumps water good. leaks a bit of oily liquid out the weep holes on the leg when it was ran in a smaller bucket........

thats normal ? what is that little hole on either side of leg about 5 inches above the cavitation plate, just below the small fin? thats where its coming from. i think it had not been run for a while and not sure how old the fuel was or if it was 50:1.

Just draiin holes. Any unburnt oil from the fuel will tend to drain out from there. Put something on the floor to catch it if you dont want it making a mess.

It would be wise to chuck out any old fuel and mix some fresh (50:1) before you foul up the carb with any gunge in the old fuel.

Can someone tell me what the little black lever is under the gear change lever? it has a symbol on it that looks like something to do with tilt.

This is the tilt lock on a slightly earlier model (which has the gear shift mounted on the side) Turns through 180? to lock or release the tilt. Lock it before you go astern !

That locks it down (prevents it from tilting), so when you go into reverse it doesn't lift itself out of the water. Release it again when you go forward so the leg tilts up if you hit something.

When its unlocked the motor can be tilted or the shallow water drive used and it will kick up if you hit an obstruction or run aground.

When you go astern you need to lock it or the motor will tilt.
