I pulled the old VERY RUSTY trim motor and there is a spring that was laying there between trim motor and pump base. it really doesn't fit onto it just lays on top and I'm not sure how to know it's in the correct place. It is on top of the pump and is sandwiched down when you put on the trim motor but it sets so precariously it's just a guessing game, the bottom of the trim motor is flat and bigger than the spring so there isn't a notch or groove for it. Also, I tried to blow out all the rust before I pulled old motor but some particles fell into the oil, I picked what I saw out but with it on the boat you can't see down into it very far. The diagram online shows a filter so maybe it will be fine if I can get it back together? The rear left bolt is all but impossible to get to, it is right below the motor bracket and you can't get a socket on it straight, I managed to get it out but putting it back will be tough.

the foam filter probably will not protect it from rust or other junk.
my foam filter fell apart when I pulled T&T motor on C40.
I also pulled the top pin on shaft while motor was locked in up position to lean T&T out away from transom a little, it helped to get to it all.

I used a magnet and then a small shop vac to clean up every thing before putting back together

Thanks for the info, I have a small magnet and was thinking of using my brake bleeder to draw out all the fluid I can and then run the magnet in there to pick up any rust. I got the filter yesterday, might try this weekend. I can't see how to tilt it back any? I pulled the only rod, mine was on a spring but it is on the bottom. I pulled all the bolts except the ones on bottom cause the engine bracket bolt is right in front of it. I was going to pull the whole trim assembly but didn't want to pull the transom mount bolts out then re seal those, they make this a lot harder than it needs to be. here is a pic of that bottom bolt and the transom bolt that holds the engine to the boat, you can see the bottom trim unit bolt tucked in behind the engine mount bolt.
