The starboard engine recently started having an issue with trying to engage it into reverse. It’s getting harder to go into reverse with a slight grinding noise. We’re thinking it’s either the clutch dog (neighbor’s thought) or just needs an adjustment. I’d rather try to do an adjustment first but here’s the question….how?

Step one is to remove lower unit and verify shift rod height.----Report when that has been done.

the shift rod is adjusted to specs by rotating the shaft to shorten it or lengthen it . IF you did not touch the shift rod recently it may be best o check the gear oil for metal chips indicating damage on the gear. at best you could try disconnecting the shift and turning it IN or OUT ...to see if things improve. jmho

Thanks for the replies!
The lower unit has not been touched since 2022. The last gearbox fluid change was done 18 months ago.

The issue is that the boat is currently slipped for the warmer season. I guess I could try to tilt it down a bit and try to remove the old fluid and pump back in fresh fluids?

I usually try to do this while it’s on the trailer but the timing didn’t work out that way this year.

the oil unless corrupted and creamy isn't the problem. the oil may simply carry metal chips.... confirming gear damage if any. tried rotating the shift rod cw or ccw one turn to see if anything happens ?

If that motor is like my '98, the shift rod goes thru a cover, with an oring seal. The cover can swell a bit binding up the shift rod, which moves down for reverse. Obviously, you need to drop the gearcase to see/repair this.
