A friend of mine is looking at a boat with one of these. Are there any compelling reasons to avoid buying this engine? I'd hate to see him buy the outboard equivalent of a Mercruiser 3.7 liter I/O.

The carb version of that motor is very good. They are lightweight and powerful. What size boat does he plan to put it on?

Be aware that they use a fair amount of fuel.

It's a carbureted model and it's already on a Four Winns 170 Horizon. I would guess the boat/motor comes in around 2000 to 2300 lbs wet. Top speed is reportedly 42 MPH on GPS. That sounds about right to me.
