Hi everybody,
I purchased a 2001 larson with 150 johnson. Previous owner got the cardbs rebuild, VST tank replaced, new battery, new spark plugs installed.. He spend $1350 on the work done on April 08. Here is my dilemma... Motor cranks up fine on ear muffs.. ( I usually start the motor in the driveway before take it to the landing area..) When i first crank it up i push the key in to activate the choke and it fires right up.. Adter i launch the boat everything is fine except for some low rpm bogging.. and i anchor and enjoy the day with my wife... and when i crank it up it fries up but before i finish pulling the anchor in it stops.. on idle... it starts right back up and if i get on the gas it is good to go... but this behavior is aggrivatng me since i like my engine idling when i am pulling the anchor in.. and there is this issue when i try to pulle a skier it bogs down on certain throttle opening and the inital ski start... I need to pass that particual opening very fast if i don't want the engine die. I have the service manual for this motor and i am open to suggestions.. I am thinking it is a fuel delivery problem...Boat has a built in gas tank.
Thank you for your help and advice.

Try priming the bulb before it dies. If it helps then you have a fuel restiction. Otherwise i'd say its trash in one of your low speed jets.

I doubt your problem is limited to trash in the low speed jets. If it was it'd be getting too much fuel at idle and the smyptoms would be a little different. Let's start with the basics. The compression will probably show good but we have to start with that. Then look at the spark plugs. Which ones are you running?

Then look at fuel. This new E-10 fuel is giving everybody fits. What grade fuel are you using? How old is the fuel in the tank?

Hi,
Fuel in the gas tanks is fresh... I fileed it up twice in th elast 2 months.. I use regular grade fuel. Spark plugs are QL784L or C...

I have the same exact problem with my 2001 8hp johnson.. except im not pulling a skier lol. But at a certain point it bogs down then goes back up... other than that it runs fine. Let me know if you figure out what it is so i can check it out on mine.

Good choice on plugs and fuel but remember, 2 month old fuel is pretty old fuel. The other thing is that sync-n-link is critical on that motor.

Hi Dhadley,
I will syn-n-link it again.. engine runs very good on earmuffs... i will post it here after i have the sync-n-link.. One more questions how am i supposed to set the idle..Is it by retarding and advencing the ignition?

Hi Dhadley,
In the service manual For sync-n-link it calls for a ignition analyzer. Is there a someother equipment that i can use instead of that iggn. analyzer.

Re: 2001 Johnson 150 idle problem..

The analizer is to set the top end timing. If that hasn't been messed with it should be OK. You can proceed with all of the other sync-n-link proceedures. Then check the wot timing with a timing light.

The idle speed is set with the low end timing. Just follow the instructions in the manual.
