2001 Johnson 150 prop shaft - clutch dog

My motor "kicks" above 1400 RPM in forward gear, so I'm thinking the clutch dog or forward gear or both are shot. I've taken the prop shaft down to the clutch dog, the reverse gear looked fine, I pulled the driveshaft and I'm wondering if I can just drive the pin out of the clutch dog to inspect the clutch dog more specifically (the forward gear side of it] - or should I just remove the shift rod, and then remove the whole prop shaft? Was looking to save some disassembly time....
Thanks for any suggestions....

Push the shift rod down to put it in reverse ( to clear the hsg ). Then remove the shift rod and pull the whole assy out to work on it.
