If there was, the factory certainly would have done it.

i was just checking because i always heard you could turn a 9.9 to a fifteen by changing carbs. just wondered if something similar might be done? anyhoo the boats a 16 ft. smoker.what about changing props?

First fine tune the motor set up.The antiventilation plate (just above the prop)should be approximately even with the bottom of the boat. Then raise the motor a little at a time until just before ventilation becomes a problem. The mounting bracket may have holes to do this with.If you can raise it 1 inch you could gain 2 to 3 MPH.Once you have adjusted the height and trim to the best performance then a prop may help to inhance it further.
With your present prop, your max WOT rpm , speed and general way you use the boat go over to the prop forum and they should be able to help with prop selection.

Re: 2001 johnson 50

The 40 HP and 50 HP versions of this engine share the same block and can be considered either of two things: 1) a 40 HP can be defined as a detuned 50, or 2) the 50 HP version can be considered a hopped up 40. The same holds true for the 60 and 70 HP triples. Given the correct parts and tuning, a 40 can be made into a 50. But what do you use to get more out of a 50? If it were as simple as popping on a different carb, they would have made a 60 and not bothered with the 60 triple. Extra cylinders and associated parts cost money. If you have a thick wallet, take your power head to a performance shop and have them modify it. I assure you the cost will be significant. The net result is less reliability and even if you got five or ten more HP, you would probably not notice the difference except in fuel consumption.

Yes, that's what he's talking about. You want to raise the mounting point of the motor to a point where there's minimal drag, but your prop (and water intake) are still down far enough for proper performance. Fine-tuning the tilt along with the mounting height can make a big difference. You also want to make sure you've got the proper prop to achieve a good WOT RPM.

Tune the motor up so it runs good, then tune the motor to the boat so it pushes it efficiently.

Look just below the ignition key and you'll find a three pin connector. That connector has +12V, Ground, and the "sense" line for the tach.
