Hey all. I have my 2001 Merc 200hp outboard (2 stroke). It has recently started having a hard time accelerating slowly. If i punch the gas, it takes off like a bat outta heck, but when I try and slowly accelerate the throttle it will bog and stall out. I'm thinking it needs a carb cleaning? Or maybe new plugs? It's winter here in the North Country, so its under wrap for the time being, but I'm ready for spring and am thinking about the boat a lot now. Should I try pulling the three carbs and cleaning them, and check plugs...or may it be something else? Thanks as always!

Some testing on your part needs to be done.-----First is a compression test.-----Then a spark test on all 6 leads.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more on a test device , yes or no.

Thanks. I know compression is good. Like I said, its shrink wrapped for now...but I will investigate when I unwrap it. It has the oil injector removed, so the plugs could be a bit fouled up at this point. Haven't pulled them yet to check condition at all. Just wanted some ideas on where to start when...or if...spring finally arrives here!
