Hey guys, I just bought this engine and took it out on the maiden voyage, no luck! Started great, took off on plane, ran beautiful. Came off of plane after about 3 minutes and it died....got towed back to the ramp...Cranks over just fine but have no spark on any plug! I have no idea where to even start! Suggestions?

A manual is the best thing first of all esspecially scince you just got this motor. If your sure it,s not gas related and there is NO Spark as you indicated. First check all the connections including ground wires. You need to eliminate the key switch thottle saftey switch and overboard switch as well as the mercury tilt kill switch. Unplug the harness at the pigtail on the motor and disconnect the black white wire on the switchbox. If you still have no fire then you need to start testing the componants. Check all companant wires for cracks and bare spots. The stator would be a good bet if there is no spark and testing would need to be done to determine if this is the problem. Do not assume anything though. Electrical parts are expensive and there are no returns on electrical products. Like I said get the manual and it has the troubleshooting section for all electrical problems. Good luck

I think I've narowed it down to the switch box, I have power coming into the box via the blue wire but nothing at the coil packs on the green wires. Any idea how to check the switch box to see if its good? Also, Im having trouble locating an online service manual. Any link would be appreciated. 2001 (I think) motor numbr is D054031, 60hp 2 stroke bigfoot.. Thanks for all the help!

When a switchbox goes usually you will get fire on at least some of the plugs. If the main capaicitor blew then it will be dead as a door nail. I,m sure Carholme (Gerry) can get you the manual info with the info you provided. He usually checks on every day. I would make absolutely sure that a kill switch is not stopping the fire by as stated remove the black white striped wire from the switchbox. This will eleminate any grounding by a switch to the switchbox and then jump the starter or use a pull cord to see if you then have spark. Any kill switch be it key kill, tilt kill, or saftey overvoard switch will not allow the switchbox send current to the coils also If the main capacitor blew you better find out why or you may blow any replacement part as well. A few reasons a switchbox would blow out are... Harness shorting out (possibly against the flywheel) Incorrectly hooking up battery terminals. Incorrectly hooking up a battery charger. Loose terminals and or wire connections to the battery. Running the engine without a battery. Corroded stator wires shorting out. Overcharging rectifier. ETC, ETC. Some manuals can be looked over on the sticky notes on the top of the list in this section. You can search for yours to see if it,s there, You also can purchase one off of this site or ebay. Just some opinions for you to consider Online manuals here--->>> http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html

If your engine is a 2001 it should really be CDM ign. But if it has a single switch box heres the test from CDI.

Well, this engine is not a 2001, Im sure you guys got it right with 1991. everything from 91-97 matches my engine perfectly. I will be working on the engine again today going through the above test sent by Laddies. I will be sure to keep you guys posted. Thanks again for all the responses!
