I Have A 2001 Mercury Bigfoot 25-HP 4-Stroke. I have been on YouTube for a week and haven't seen one Video on the Mercury 25-HP 4-Stroke, explaining on how to disassemble or disconnect the shift linkage from the lower end of the 25-HP 4-Stroke outboard. I did read where one guy said on the 2 stroke you are to remove the starter and disconnect the shift linkage there and i also seen a video on a guy working on a 4 stroke mariner 8-HP where he had this one big nut with a rubber bong connected to it. When the guy removed that nut and rubber bong there was the shift connection there and he disconnected his shift rod at that spot but that was for a1990 mariner 8-HP. I have the same nut and bong on my mercury 2001 but i don't want to remove it and end up causing more problems. can anyone tell me the best way to disconnect that **** linkage please thanks.

I would start by reading the manual. You have one. don't you? Then you won't have to search YouTube to find all the wrong ways ti work on your motor. My 2 cents.

Here is the manual you require if you don't have one:

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/FourStroke/854785r2/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

If you provide us with the s/n of your engine, we can direct you to the parts listing.

Starting at page 6-13 of Section 6, you will see where you have to disconnect the top end of the shift shaft prior to removing the LU.

Why did you put up 3 different posts for the same problem?

Re: 2001 Mercury 25-HP 4-Stroke

Yeah I ordered a Mercury/Mariner service manual for the 25 Bigfoot (4-Stroke) and that's what really **** me off I have the damn manual and it doesn't even show where u disconnect the Linkage. I'm thinking this is why I keep seeing people asking about the same thing how to disconnect the 25hp 4 stroke, cause there is no diagram showing how to do it not even in the manual, Amazing... I'll get it worked out I'll just remove the starter and unhook it and keep on working thanks for your help...

2001 Mercury Bigfoot 25-HP 4-Stroke Shift Linkage and Impeller...

2001 Mercury Bigfoot 25-HP 4-Stroke Shift Linkage and Impeller...

Maybe I need to be more specific in my questions and descriptions of my problems. I do have a (Service Manual) but service manuals tell you what it is but most don't tell you how to do what u need to do and I did read every page on chapter 6 on Lower Unit and all I see is diagrams of the lower unit taken apart but no where in the chapter dose it tell you how and where you disconnect the shift linkage and by looking at the diagram how was I to know you have to take the starter off just to get to that linkage, the starter isn't even on the lower unit diagram. I had like 5 people answer my thread and only 1 person give me good advice I thought this forum was to help people not make fun of them but for the serious people that come to this site I just wanted to say thanks for your help.

Here ya go. Disconnect shift rod (#10) by removing clip (#8). Shift into forward gear by pulling shift shaft (#23 ) forward then flip retainer(#24) rearward and pull shaft (#24) to the left disengaging shift rod to lower unit.

Yes I have that diagram in my book I read that whole chapter but if you look at the diagram you posted me, that is the shifting operations for the upper not the lower unit lol... I'm dropping the bottom end I'm not doing anything to the top end all I'm trying to do is change out my Impeller... There is a Shift rod the runs from the lower end of the unit to the top I'm just trying to find out how to disconnect the rod running from the lower unit to the top and the shifting systems on the motor it self...

Thanks for your help anyway I'm just going to get on it tomorrow and make sure to record it all with my video cam and put it up on youtube so i don't see like 10 people a day with the same questions how to disconnect the bottom end from the top end of a 25hp 4 stroke...

halibut;

When you follow the instructions on page 6-13 and undo the top of the shift shaft, the whole shaft comes out with the lower unit when you remove it. Just do what it says and remove the LU.

Well, 1halibut, you didn't say what you wanted to do except to remove the upper shift linkage, so this is what you get. If you would have said or asked how to drop the lower to change the impeller you would have received your answer. Every manual I've seen tells you how to drop the lower to perform what is annual maintenance. That's why I asked about the manual. If you all had a manual, the ten of you wouldn't be asking the same questions - which by the way is not true.

Don't get P.Oed when you get the answer to the question you ask instead of the question you meant to ask. And BTW, you aren't owed help because you ask. It's all donated by people just like you.

Off the soap box.

Ditto....it comes out in one piece, not like Yamaha/Mariner with 2 piece rod.
