I'm very inexperienced with inboards.
We've got a 2001 Tige 23' boat. Mercruiser Mag 350 MPI, V-drive.
The prop comes out of the hull into what looks like a brass driveshaft guide.
How well should the shaft rotate in the guide? It looks rubber packed.

It's fairly tight in there, it can be moved by hand, but it won't rotate freely...

How should it be setup properly?

This is a brass "guide" that hangs down under the hull, the prop shaft rides goes through it.

How much friction should there be between that guide and the prop shaft itself?

Assuming you mean the strut that supports the shaft, there is something called a "cuttlass bearing" installed in the strut ,there replaceable and should never be run with out lubrication (water hose or in the water),and some will have a resistance to turning the prop by hand.

Yes, it's the prop strut and cutlass bearing.
I can turn the prop by hand, but it's not without resistance... I guess how do you determine how much resistance is too much?

you're also spinning the tranny and v-drive too in addition to what Bt Doc mentioned. so, there should be some resistance and a dry cutless will only make it worse.

to inspect the cutless look at the rubber bearing from both ends of the strut. you want to see even wear all around the bearing, both leading and trailing ends. that gives you an indication if the engine is aligned correctly although it's possible for the strut to get knocked out of alignment too. you'd be feeling vibrations in the boat if they aren't aligned pretty closely to specs.

is there something else you're trying to diagnose? the cutless should be pretty tight, you don't want too much movement.
