I'm looking at a boat for a friend of mine that is clueless about boats...

I'm wanting to know if there is anything I should pay close attention to to look for with this drive train during the sea trial today...

Here's what I know about the boat:
2001 LARSON 190 LXI Bowrider
Volvo Penta 4.3 Litre V-6

Here's a picture of the drive:

I know it's the carb'd motor, not FI, but just wondering if there were any common problem areas with the VP system from '01 I should look for.

I'll be listening for smooth idle and power, any grinds/odd noises while powering up and especially while turning under power, but other than that, not sure what else to look for.

I wish I had serial numbers from the drive and motor, but alas, I do not!

Thanks!

Sounds like you know most of it already.

Other than checking the normal winterization has been routenley done...

From experience, look to make sure it still has the zirk fitting and tube on the drive and it's not loose, (almost shows up in your pic). These have a tendancy to become loose and let water into the gimbal bearing. While your down there, be sure to look at anodes and bellows. Make sure the bellows look like they have been recently replaced or at least not cracked. (Ask the guy the last time he had the drive serviced. That will give you a clue.)

While turning hard, you will feel a little noise/grumbal but that's normal from what I'm told by the mechanics here. It's hard to explain how much but if it's enough to worry you, have it checked out.

If it all looks good to you, it's old enough to warrant you taking it to a reliable mechanic to check it out BEFORE you buy.

I'm sure others will have more input.
