Just found out the problem with my motor is that cylinder #4 has ZERO compression. I had a friend pull the power head to check out the cylinders and inside of #4 has some scratches in it. The piston appears to be fine. What is the best thing to do now? Should I sleeve it or bore it? Can anyone tell me what it should cost to have someone do this work too.

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: 2002 225 Efi

I would never bore out a single cylinder. If it needs to be bored, then all should be bored. Displacement is dictated by bore x stroke, and if 1 cyl. is larger, then power output will change for that cyl. Harmonics and balance will also be different due to larger piston mass in that cyl. That is not a cheap motor to take chances with. It may run fine and you may notice nothing different, but it will not live long like that in my opinion, and that's not something I would want hanging over my head when I'm out 30+ miles.
If the cylinder is scratched, then the piston will be too. If you can't afford to oversize all 6 cyl., then get that one sleeved to the same size, use a new piston in that hole, hone the other cylinders to break any glaze and give them a fresh surface, and install new rings on all the pistons.
