Trying to help out a friend. He has a 02 40hp Merc 2 stroke that runs fine for a few times out then its back to the bench. Pulls the carbs cleans them up and off and running again. Everytime he has problems with it there is oil dripping every where on the carb throats ets... All fittings are tight and sealed. Could the oil injector not be sealing off???? Is it simple to replace injector or replave whole assembly. This is a case of I am not there so I cant look at it and I am not familiar with this engine. Thanks.

How often does he use it? Does it have old gas in the tank that is gumming things up in a short time? Does the gas smell like gas? I'm not inclined to look into the oil pump. Their failure rate is practically nonexistant.

Every four or five times out he starts getting the hard to start and the oiliy mess. The boat is used shall I say at least 4 times a month so I would think that would be enough to keep good fuel running RIGHT???? The way he described it to me the oil system just seems to inject to much oil. If it was the bigger engines I could be more help to him but these smaller ones I just aint messed with enough.

Some people used to run the gas out after using the motor. You don't want to do that with an oil injected model because as the gas runs out, oil is still pumping full strength. Make sure he's not doing that.

That also happens if he's running portable tanks empty before switching. Make sure he's not doing that.

Air leaks in the fuel supply line can do it too. Sucking bubbles means less fuel flow, full oil flow.
