2002 75 horse merc 4 stroke -1 carb clogged?

Running wide open and one cylinder shut off . Still had spark just seemed as if that one carb clogged 100% in a second.That plug lookes a little whiter than the rest.So we limped home slowly no big deal. The mechenic says one of the 4 carbs is clogged and wants to re build all them for $ 900.oo Moneys tight so i thought i would try to just clean the bad one myself. Is this a reasonable idea?? Thanks for any thoughts.

Your carbs are going to come off as a group,so while they are off I would just clean them all.Just did my neighbors 2002 merc 50 4stroke,not a bad job but best price we could find for 4 carb kits was 194 bucks delivered.Bear in mind that a decent vacuum gauge will be needed to sync the carbs,on the 50 the #4 carb was the master,while each higher carb had to have 1 cm less of mercury vacuum,so #1 was 3cm less than #4. The carb kits come with a new float,hence the big cost.

Hi Crappiejig, thanks for your reply. The local parts store quoted me 130$$ for each of the four gasket rebuild kits 520 $$ total. True that they all come off togeather as a unit ,i just thought i would side step the extra 3 rebuild kit s purchase price gougeing. Mabe just clean the bowls real good and soak all 4 carbs in cleaner overnite ,fullly submerged , then blow air through them and put them back on. Hate to short cut things ,but i think one spec of dust is to blame for all this in the first place. Thanks again.

Before you spend any big monies.. pull the fuel lines feeding the carbs, there is a $7 filter in each one and yours could be stopped up restricting fuel flow. A lot of people including a few tech's dont even know they are there!! I would not think the carbs would need rebuilt unless engine has sat idle for a long period. Yours will be similar to picture below....

Thank you FASBULLIT the pic was great!!! I will be tearing it down soon and looking for your ++q++ in the filters. The boat never sat for over 5 mos<<<<<< Ran it with great lake fun and a lot of fishing sucess . Ime in Arizona doing the lake powel stuff.......When you are 20 miles from home on lake powell and you are stuck it can be days before you get out.......
