Hello Iboaters my neighbors boat sank with a 90hp merc on it and I am wondering what I should do when I raise it for him.he is freaking out because he does not want it to become unsalvageable. What do you pros think I should do?I know the gas,oil and battery are garbage and need to be replaced but what exact steps should I take when raiseing this? Thanks Keith

There is some pretty good writeups on submerged motors, with the solid state electronics that are sealed you may have a better chance at reviving the engine? I would say take your time and get your ducks in a row before bringing it up, once it hits oxygen the corrosion begins.

If it sunk in freshwater, raise it and immediately remove the plugs, drain the carbs and turn it over to get water out. Now squirt some 2 cycle oil into the plug holes. Drain the oil tanks, and refill it. Now hook up some fresh premix fuel and run it on the muffs or in the lake for 45 minutes to dry her out.

If she sunk in saltwater, and the pistons, cylinders, bearings rods etc. must be disassembled cleaned and oiled, before the freshwater stuff is performed.
