Hey everyone,

So the boat is finally in the water and I am having issues getting it started. I took the time this spring to rebuild the carbs, replace the fuel filter, and changed all spark plugs.

The boat starts but stalls either immediately or after a few seconds. The longest it ran was about 7 seconds before stalling. I had a similar problem last year which turned out to be a leaky carb, but unlike last time there is no fuel pooling in the outboard cover and no visible leaks from the carbs. I pumped the bulb until it was hard as usual and still nothing. I have a feeling it is a fuel delivery problem.

Can anyone please tell me where to start and what to check for in the morning? I need to get the boat off the dock since I am not a member at the club where the boat was launched, and I need to go fishing!!

Bad gas? Maybe water in your fuel tank, ethanol is bad about that if you let it sit. Pull your plugs and look for one that may not be firing.

You may wanna check out your fuel pump. If need be, rebuild. See if your lines aren't clamped down correctly. Also, your idle adjustment? Has your motor been stalling on your before your parts replacements? If yes, then you might wanna adjust your idle adjustment. While your at it, overlook your fuel and air mixture from your carbs. If you have yourself a manual for your motor, it should be all in there for you.

See if you can keep it running longer by intermittedly pushing in on the key primer once it starts. If so,you likely have one or more fouled carburetors. If that doesn't work try pumping the fuel primer bulb once it starts and see if it'll run longer. If so,it is likely a fuel pump issue.

So I changed my primer bulb. Nothing. Checked and rechecked my spark plugs. Nothing. Checked all the gas lines and filters. Nothing. It still will start and then die after about 5 seconds. I have a guy coming to look at it in the next few days. I am thinking the fuel pump. Does the pump really cost $400? I hope that this is not what is wrong.

It's a FICHT engine, so the injection components are pretty expensive. The MSRP on just the injector is $580.

The engine has carburators. Not fuel injected.

Whops, I had BRP Parts on Evinrude not Johnson, my bad. In your case it is a carburated engine, VRO system, VRO pump (it pumps fuel and oil) will run you $350-400.
