I'm hoping that someone here may be able to vouch for one of the boat dealers/mechanics in the area. I live in the Memphis Metro Area and this past weekend while running my motor on the muffs I noticed some milky oil building up on the prop between the prop and the lower unit.

It smelled like exhaust and was kind of thick, not like lower unit oil or oil from the motor either. I know that a leaky prop shaft seal will usually leak from the center of the prop (It doesnt look like a prop shaft seal leak) and I just had both of those replaced a few months ago. I also hadnt engadged the drive so it shouldn't have been mixed that well with water if it was coming from the lower unit. There was also quite a bit of oil on the ground that the prop had blown out with the exhaust. A noticeable amount. It looked burned though.

The engine also didnt quite idle as well as it used to even though our temps were normal 70's.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? If not do any of you know any reputable dealers/mechanics that work in this area that I could take it to? I've dealt with some hack boat mechanics before and I would rather pay a good price for good work than pay some hack to give me more problems.

Thanks Guys in advance.

Sounds like unburnt 2 stroke oil.Very common running it on the muffs especially if the motor has been setting awhile.Mine oozes black oily crud everywhere after setting up.

WELCOME TO IBOATS!!!

bishop,

The engine will not/does not perform the same on the "muffs". Those engines need backpressure, from the water, to run right.

The residue that you saw is probably exhaust residue. It may be time to decarb your engine. See "decarbing your engine" in Engine FAQ's section. That's a good spring project.

If your lower unit is sealed, it will not leak. I assume you had a shop do the repairs? If so, it's their baby. However, that does no let you off the hook.

Anytime the lower unit is "opened up" new fill/drain plug seals need to be installed. If you have a leak, into the L/U I'll be that is the source of the leak.

You guys are the best. I just didnt expect that much un burned oil. I probably havent run the motor in a month or so since running it the other day.

I also noticed when I primed it that fuel was coming down out of the lower cowling Like some sort of overflow to keep you from flooding it. Does this sound normal to you guys? I couldnt see exactly where it was coming from.

I'm just not up to speed on these newer motors.

Thanks so much for all your help.

Running an outboard on muffs gives us a demo of what they leave in the lakes/rivers and why the econazis want all carbed 2 strokes banned.

Good reason to run synthetic. Its supposed to be more bio-degradable,if it really is?

I was using that penzoil synthetic blend. Wonder if that was where the sludge was coming from?

When I use the Penzoil blend I get far more of the gunky residue around the prop than when I use other oils, I have no idea if it means anything good or bad about the oil though.

May be a good thing. If the oil isnt burning up then it's lubricating something right?

If you have fuel comming out from the cowling you have a problem. Most likely one of the jets is hung up. Best bet is to overhaul the carbs.
