Just bought and am installing on boat. The instructions for installing the automatic oiler is not clear it says the electrical hook up is under the cowling in the engine compartment. Can anyone tell me where the hookup is located two of us have given up.
I am going to remove the lower cover of the cowling tomorrow a dealer machanic told me it was around the starter. The instructions they give with the motor is not very clear I don't think they want you to install it yourself. They give very little info with this motor other than breaking in instrucions. I have been running Johnsons since 1968 this is the first new one and I am sorry I bought it too many bells and whistles. Guess I will get used to it.
Can anyone help me?null

DJ-

The 2-wire connector is over by the starter, but you shouldn't have to remove the cowl to get at it. Dealerships usually go by either an installation manual or by the service manual for the correct hook up procedures. Motors only come with an owners manual and its not designed to give a novice installer detailed instruction. Why didn't you have the dealer rig this motor for you?? You didn't buy this from Ed's Marine Super Store, did you???

Make sure you get all the air out of the oil line by pumping the oil tank bulb until no air bubles come out of the hose, then install the hose. Mark the oil level in the reservoir and be sure to pre-mix 50:1 for the first few tanks of fuel. Make SURE that oil is being consumed from the reservoir BEFORE you switch to straight fuel. Also make sure the warning horn works properly - if it don't it CAN void your warranty. If you need a good service center, I know of one in Virginia Beach if that is close.

-John

Yes John I bought it from Ed's superstore. Did not want to tow my boat to Richmond to have it installed. I am all ready to run except for the oil hookup. I think the plug was pushed down under out of sight because you can not see it in the engine compartment. Is there a problem with buying from Ed's Marine? He had the beast price. Also I have tried to buy a manual unable to find one. Thanks

Hi DJ,

No problem in BUYING from Ed's, just don't go back there for service or try to return ANYTHING. I personally know a few folks who've dealt with their service dept, its awful - and their policy is "all sales final".

The 2002 manuals are not out yet, but should be soon - if you want one, it would have to be a special order, I don't know many dealers who stock factory service manuals. If you could get your hands on a 2000 manual (2001 manuals never made it to completion with OMC's demise), or an installation guide it would probably help you some.

It's been a while since I've lived in VA, but if memory serves me correct you are fairly close to Virginia Beach - If you need a GOOD service center, see the boys at Colley Marine on Shore Drive, might not be the cheapest, but they're good.

If you need any additional assistance, post on this board, there are some well-versed and experienced Johnson/Evinrude guys hanging out here.

G'luck!

-John

To test your OMS pump (VRO), bleed the line like Illini John said, but do not hook it up. Run a 50:1 mix thru the motor, letting it idle or fast idle only. When the "No Oil" lite comes on (it takes a while due to oil in the pump) and the horn sounds, hook up the oil line, but do no squeeze the bulb. Keep running the motor until the lite goes out. That way you test the alarm system, and make sure the pump will prime itself and deliver oil. Then mark the oil tank to check consumption.

Break in the motor according to the owner's manual. Remember that adjustments are not warranty items and you may be responsible for any problems associated with improper set up.

I want to thank you both for your useful information. To let you know John the darn thing was under the lower cowling I would have never found it if I had not removed the cover. Thanks everyone for the help. This is a great forum. I am all ready to go and run my new motor all I need is a warmer day. :)
