I have a 2002 Mecury 4-stroke that won't idle. It has plenty of mid range and top end power, but when I go to idle and/or try to shift into reverse the engine chugs and then dies. Just before the engine dies it will idle at about 500 RPM for a few moments while it chugs and runs really rough, then it just qits. If I shift into neutral using the push button on the throttle and then advance the throttle, it will run smoothly from about 800 RPM up through the power range.
I have fresh plugs gapped correctly, fresh gas, new fuel filter and a clean fuel bowl. In addition, I have poured Gum-Out fuel sytem conditioned/cleaner in the tank to no avail. All of the four plugs that I took out looked were in pretty good shape and it appeared that they were all firing. I am sure that all cyclinders are firing and that it is a fuel problem.
My guess is that the idle circuit on one or more of the carbs are clogged. Before I take it into the Mecury dealer, does anyone have any suggestions?
