My 50hp OB has a remote mounted control on the sideconsole. The key igniton starts it when it's cool. but then it either stalls and then doesn't restart. The 20amp fuse is ok I checked the ignition switch according to the service manual and it checks out ok as well as the neutral start switch. But I don't get any 12volts once the motor stalls and cuts out not does the trim switches work either. I disconnected the wires from the starter coil and it checks out too? When I put the circuit all back it doesn't engage or start, like it's a dead short of somethig? The battery has 12.83 volts and is 2yrs old and the charging system is ok.the only thing left is the starter motor itself? Has any one ran across this situation before? Any suggestions or pointers are greatly appreciated.

can you post the year so i can look up a wiring diagram - in the mean time - disconnect the black and yellow wire from the switchbox and retry - might be an orange wire if it's an older motor -this will eliminate a kill switch problem .and check the plug connector at the engine - pull it apart and look for corrosion , put it back together and wiggle it while looking at the multimeter for intermittent voltage -

oops i'ma dumbass i just saw its a 2002 - in that case i pass to the next person - 80& 90's motors i am familiar with - sorry .

Try the "Outboard won't start" troubleshooting in the Engine FAQs Forum, JD.

Sounds to me like you may have some poor connections from the battery to the engine and starter.

Let us know what you find.
